Department of Civil Engineering
Delivering high-quality civil engineering education, cutting-edge research, and innovative solutions for sustainable national development and infrastructure.
History of the Civil Engineering Degree Programme
The Programme started in 2001. It was formerly housed in Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil Faculty of Engineering. Civil Engineering Department offers Honours Degree in Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Civil Engineering. The duration for the degree programme in the department is five (5) years of ten (10) semesters. The Department of Civil Engineering admitted its first set of students in 2001/2002 session. The students’ enrolment has witnessed steady increase from a population of less than sixty (60) students in 2001 to over five hundred (500) students in 2018. The staff strength also increases from one academic staff in 2001 to 27 academic staff, 14 technologists in 2024. The Department has secured a full accreditation in 2019 by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).
The Programme graduated its first set of graduates in 2007/2008 academic session, second sets 2008/2009 and the rest from 2009/2010 to 2023/2024 academic sessions. In the first two semesters, the students are engaged in the general courses of Science and Technology for them to learn courses relating to fundamentals of basic sciences and engineering graphics. Subsequently, upon completion of the two semesters, the students are allowed to proceed to 200 Level where they are introduced to the general engineering courses. The 200 Level culminates into a six-weeks Student Work Experience Programme (SWEP) while the last six semesters are for core Civil Engineering courses.
The structure of Civil Engineering courses as taught in Aliko-Dangote University of Science and Technology Wudil is such that the students are introduced to and engaged in the core curriculum set out by the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMASs) of both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). Additional courses are added to the courses suggested by the BMAS in such a way as to facilitate a total Civil Engineering graduate that is up-to-date with the current global advancement drive.
